Holiday Shopping Security Tips

During the holiday season, the Department of Public Safety encourages everyone to take extra precautions to avoid becoming a victim of a crime.  Help Us, Help You to enjoy the holiday season.

  • Carry Small Amounts Of Cash
  • Carry Keys, Credit Cards And Cash Separate From Each Other
  • Use ATMs Located In High Traffic Areas – With Caution
  • Consolidate Packages Into Larger Bags – Keep Hands Free
  • Hold Your Handbag Close To Your Body – Keep It Zipped
  • Carry Your Wallet In Your Front Pocket
  • Avoid Conversations With Strangers
  • Park In Well Lit And Travelled Areas – Close To The Entrance Whenever Possible
  • Shop Early To Avoid The Crowds And Criminals
  • Keep An Eye On Children
  • Keep Valuables And Gifts Out Of Sight
  • Leave Stores Long Before Closing – Safety In Numbers
  • Stay Alert, Avoid Becoming Over Tired
  • Store Packages In The Trunk, But Move Your Car If You Are Going To Continue Shopping At The Same Location
  • Check Under And Around Your Vehicle As You Approach It, and Look Inside Before Entering
  • Do Not Be In Too Much Of A Hurry – Make Sure Your Credit Cards Are Returned And You Receive A Receipt
  • Shop Smartly On The Internet
    • Shop At Known Sites – Know Return And Privacy Policies
    • Update Your Computer From Viruses
    • Install A Firewall
    • Protect Your Wireless Connection At Home
    • Avoid Obvious Passwords
    • Use One Credit Card For Online Purchases, A Second For Stores
    • Be Smart, Be Safe, Do Not Be Spoofed
